How Patrick White Publishing Works
How Patrick White Publishing Works
Patrick White Publishing is a paid author services company. We help independent authors turn finished or in-progress manuscripts into professionally produced books — through illustration, cover design, formatting, publishing setup, and marketing. Authors pay only for the services they choose, retain 100% of their copyright, and receive their royalties directly from Amazon. This page explains exactly how that works, what’s included, and what isn’t.
Our 4-Step Publishing Process
We keep the process simple, paced, and author-driven. You stay in control at every stage.
Step 1 — Share Your Story (Free Consultation)
You send us your manuscript, illustration brief, or project notes. We review it, ask questions about your goals, and recommend the services that actually fit your project. No obligation, no pressure. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll tell you.
Step 2 — Receive a Custom Quote
We send you an itemized quote based only on the services you need — not a fixed package. You see line-by-line pricing for illustration, cover design, formatting, editing support, KDP setup, and marketing. You decide what to include and what to skip.
Step 3 — Production & Review
Once you approve the quote, our team begins work. You review every illustration, every cover concept, every formatted page. We revise until you’re satisfied. Nothing moves forward without your written approval.
Step 4 — Publish & Promote
After final sign-off, we help upload your book to Amazon KDP (and other platforms if you choose) under your own author account. We then support promotion through branding assets, social creatives, and marketing campaigns if you’ve selected those services.
What Authors Pay For
We are a paid services company. Authors invest in production work — the same work a traditional publisher would handle internally, only here you keep ownership of the result. Here’s what that investment covers:
| Service | What's Included |
|---|---|
| Illustration | Custom artwork created for your story — children's books, covers, or interior art |
| Cover Design | Print and ebook cover design built to Amazon KDP specifications |
| Interior Formatting | Print-ready and Kindle-ready interior layouts, including image placement |
| Editing Support | Proofreading, copyediting, or developmental support depending on package |
| Publishing Setup | KDP/IngramSpark account guidance, metadata, ISBN information, category and keyword selection |
| Author Branding | Author logo, social profiles, headshot direction, brand consistency |
| Marketing | Social creatives, launch graphics, Amazon ad assets, promotional materials |
Authors are never charged for services they didn’t select. We do not bundle hidden fees into our quotes.
What Authors Keep — Rights, Royalties & Ownership
This is the most important section on this page. We want it to be unambiguous.
Authors retain 100% of copyright.
You own your manuscript. You own the illustrations we produce for your book. You own the cover. Copyright is registered in your name — not ours.
Authors own the publishing rights.
You are the publisher of record. Your book is listed on Amazon under your own KDP account, or under an imprint name you choose. We do not hold or license your rights.
Authors receive royalties directly.
Royalty payments are made by Amazon (and any other platform you publish on) straight into your bank account. Patrick White Publishing does not receive, hold, redistribute, or take a percentage of your royalties. Whatever Amazon pays, you keep — 100%.
Authors can leave at any time.
Because your book is published under your own account, you can edit it, update it, change the cover, or unpublish it without our involvement. You are not locked into a contract with us after production is complete.
Authors can access Amazon KDP directly.
You always have your own KDP login. Many of our authors choose to handle their own ongoing updates after launch — and we encourage that independence.
How Royalties Work in Plain English
Royalty rates on Amazon KDP are set by Amazon, not by us. Here’s roughly how they break down:
- Kindle ebooks priced $2.99–$9.99: 70% royalty (after delivery fee)
- Kindle ebooks priced outside that range: 35% royalty
- Paperback print books: 60% of list price minus print cost
- Hardcover print books: 60% of list price minus print cost
These payments are deposited by Amazon directly into the bank account linked to your KDP author profile, usually 60 days after the end of each sales month. Patrick White Publishing has no access to, visibility into, or claim on this payment flow. Your sales data and earnings dashboard belong to you alone.
What We Don't Do — And Won't Promise
We’ve seen the publishing industry. We know what predatory practices look like. So we’re upfront about what we will not do:
- We do not guarantee bestseller status. Anyone who guarantees a #1 Amazon ranking is selling you a ranking in an obscure subcategory, not a real readership.
- We do not guarantee a specific number of sales. Book sales depend on the manuscript, the market, and ongoing author effort — none of which any publishing service can guarantee.
- We do not buy, trade, or fabricate reviews. All reviews on our authors’ Amazon pages are organic.
- We are not a traditional publisher. We do not pay advances and we do not select manuscripts based on commercial potential. We provide paid production services.
- We do not take royalties from your book. Once production is complete and you are paid up, our financial relationship ends.
If any publishing company promises you guaranteed bestseller status, guaranteed sales numbers, or takes a long-term royalty cut on top of upfront fees, that is a vanity publishing red flag. We are not that.
Why Authors Choose a Hybrid Model
Traditional publishing pays advances but takes rights and 85–95% of royalties. Pure self-publishing keeps everything but demands serious design, formatting, and marketing skill. The hybrid model — what we do — sits between them.
Authors choose Patrick White Publishing when they want:
- Professional production quality without learning Adobe InDesign and KDP from scratch
- Full ownership of their book and royalties
- Time savings — production typically takes weeks, not the 12–24 months of traditional publishing
- Direct guidance through KDP setup, metadata, categories, and launch
- A real human team to talk to, not a generic upload portal
It’s a real financial investment. We’re upfront about that — and so are several of our authors in their public reviews. The question worth asking is whether the time saved, the production quality, and the rights retained are worth that investment for your specific project.
